It's been 32 years since it last graced our screens, but the BBC's second most popular science fiction is about to make a return, and you could be seeing it as soon as this winter. SyFy yesterday ordered a run of 13 episodes.
Veteren Heroes and CSI writer Joe Pokaski is been assigned the task of penning the new story, which will re-imagine the story, and reboot it from the offset. Any other details are still shrouded in secrecy, but pre-production is said to begin as early as next week and a casting hunt is already underway.
Since the show disappeared at the height of it's popularity back in 1981 the threat of the show returning has come up numerous times. The BBC and Sky have been rumoured to be rebooting the show. For the fans who never had a clue the show was coming to a close back in the early 80's they have been reliving the show on DVD, or through BBC radio plays which themselves re-invented the story on their arrival in 2008.
The show ran for four seasons and saw the character of Blake form an alliance of "criminals" to fight against the galactic federation headed up by vile seductress Servalan. At the end of the second series Blake disappeared and his crew spent the following two seasons searching for their leader. Darker than Doctor Who the crew of the Liberator (later Scorpio) were always on the firing line, and character met untimely and often unexpected deaths throughout the series. Christmas 1981 delivered a cruel blow to the fans of the show Blake and mainly new crew were re-united, but the re-uniting lead to tragedy as each and every one was killed at the hands of federation soldiers. For one of the very first times in television history the good guys died leaving the bad guys victorious.
